Narrative

Roy Maxine Blizzard was born to Fredrick Charles Blizzard and Leona Miller Blizzard sometime in July of 1909, but his birth was not recorded until Aug. 1 and that date stood as his birthdate for the rest of his life.

He married Lillian Rose Thompson, daughter of John T. Thompson and Mary Jane Jenkins on 17 March 1932 at Schwamb Presbyterian Church in Charleston, West Virginia. They had 4 children together.

Blizzard Had 3 Eagles, 4 Birds
Roy Blizzard's sizzling performance in last week's men's club championship at Meadowbrook brought smiles to the faces of many localgolfers. Roy virtually obliterated a much younger opponent, Delbert Beasley, in the final match as he fired a sensational 63 over the first 18 holes of the 36-hole match.

The veteran golfer has been playing local courses for most of his 50 years. He is one of the best-known and well-liked golfers in the county.

He has won many local championships, capturing both the city- wide and county crowns several times. Roy believes his best effort in competition was in 1946 when he finished second in the State
Open.

Roy's 63 came on three eagles, four birdies, nine pars and two bogeys. Here is his card as compared with par at Meadowbrook:

Par Out ................. 543--- 454 344—36
Blizzard Out ............. 443--- 245 344—33
Par In .................. 444--- 444 335—35—71
Blizzard In .............. 433--- 244 343---30---63

This eight under par effort is not Roy's lowest score. He says that about 20 years ago while playing with his brother, John, at Meadowbrook he had a 61. He had another 63 in competitive golf around
15 years ago at Kanawha. However, it was in a match play event and Roy closed out his opponent
on the 16th hole. With the pressure off he bogied the last two holes. * * * Roy Got Only Two Hours Sleep

Blizzard, a foreman at Carbide where he has worked for the past 30 years, got only two hours sleep before his match with Beasley. He had worked the midnight shift, didn't get to bed until 7 a.m. and was up at 9 o'clock. Roy, an ardent grouse hunter who can walk the best of them into the ground, says his driving and putting was just about average.

What made the difference were his iron shots which were going right up to the pin, Blizzard is a perfectionist on the golf course and can be found almost any day of the season at Meadowbrook or a local driving range sharpening up his game. Of late he has spent quite a bit of time helping his two younger sons, Edsel, 20, and Dudley, 18, learn the game.

He pointed out that considerable time is spent arguing with them instead of teaching. However, some of his efforts have paid off as Dudley recently set a national record for driving of 342 yards in a recent junior Jaycees contest.

Roy says he's tried to get the boys started playing right. He believes that if you are going
to score low you have to know what the club is doing all through the swing. "There's less likelihood of getting off your game, even for golfers who shoot around par, if you can do this," he said.
